  • Date: Mar 06 2023

Carboxytherapy is a popular non-surgical procedure to treat different medical conditions. It is a good alternative if you want to avoid cosmetic surgeries to treat certain skin conditions. The procedure is also used for healing wounds.

In this post, we’ll read more about Carboxytherapy, its procedure, benefits, and side effects.

What is Carboxytherapy?

Carboxytherapy is the process of injecting carbon dioxide gas underneath the skin to treat cellulite, dark circles, stretch marks, and other skin conditions. The presence of excess carbon dioxide will force the body to send more blood to the targeted area.

Special fine-tipped needles are used to inject the CO2 gas directly into the skin. This results in increased blood circulation and more oxygen. Better blood circulation rejuvenates the skin cells and improves elasticity. The end result is that you have smoother and good-looking skin, by improving and repairing the skin’s texture, appearance and scar remodelling.

Procedure

Carboxytherapy is an outpatient procedure that takes around 45 minutes in total. The dermatologist will apply a numbing cream to the targeted area to make the process painless.

A carbon dioxide gas tank is connected to a flow regulator. The gas is sent into a sterilized tube and passed through a filter to remove impurities. The tube is connected to a fine needle on the other end. The CO2 gas reaches the needle, which is inserted into the target area of the patient.

The dermatologist will vary the amount of gas depending on the patient’s condition, the treatment area, etc.

You can leave and get back to work after the session is complete. However, you might feel some discomfort and a strange sensation for a couple of hours after the treatment.

Benefits of Carboxytherapy

One of the biggest advantages of Carboxytherapy is the reduction of cellulite in the targeted areas without going under the knife. The CO2 gas injected into the fat cells will gradually improve skin elasticity and alters the fat cells that cause cellulite. Patients might feel some pressure when the gas is injected into the skin. The expanding gas causes this sensation. The feeling will subside in a few hours.

  • Reduce Dark Circles

Carboxytherapy can reduce dark circles under the eyes and minimize the signs of aging. The CO2 gas is injected into the damaged tissues to increase blood circulation and smoothen fine lines. The area under the eyes will feel warm and tingly for a few hours after the treatment. The procedure is also good to rejuvenate tired eyes.

  • Minimize Stretch Marks

Injecting carbon dioxide into stretch marks and scars stimulates fibroblasts. These are responsible for producing elastin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid, which make the skin appear smooth, tight, and young. Treating scars with Carboxytherapy is a painless process as scars don’t have nerves. You might feel itchy for a few minutes when CO2 gas is injected into stretch marks.

  • Heal Certain Wounds

Carboxytherapy can be used to treat chronic wounds associated with peripheral heart disease and diabetes. It is used in conjunction with other treatments if the patient has no other health conditions.

Hair loss is termed as alopecia. Sending Co2 gas to affected areas on the scalp increases blood circulation, which can gradually promote hair growth. The treatment has to be combined with medication and other procedures for faster results.

Pre and Post Session Tips

There are no specific tips for pre-session. The dermatologist will provide clear instructions based on the case. The same applies to post-treatment care. The tingling sensation can last for up to 24 hours. It will be mild enough for you to follow your routine. There is no risk of scarring with Carboxytherapy.

However, this is not a one-time procedure. It has to be repeated a few times until the targeted area is healed. Carboxytherapy can be performed up to twice a month.

This process is not suitable for everyone. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not go for Carboxytherapy. People with fever, kidney problems, blood clotting disorders, heart diseases, high blood pressure, and active infections should avoid Carboxytherapy.

Side Effects

There are almost no side effects of Carboxytherapy. The injection site might be sore for a while and shows signs of bruising. The bruises will go away within a week. The pain shouldn’t last for more than a day.

If Carboxytherapy is used for cellulite treatment, it is recommended to avoid soaking in tubs, swimming, etc., for the next 24 hours.

Contact your dermatologist immediately if you notice any other signs of discomfort, pain, or swelling.

Final Words

Carboxytherapy will show results only after a series of treatments. It can take anywhere between four to eight weeks to notice definite changes in your skin’s elasticity and appearance. Maintenance is required to sustain the results. You will have to attend a Carboxytherapy once every two to four weeks to continue experiencing smooth and youthful skin. The total number of sessions shall be defined by the dermatologist depending upon your skin condition, indication of treatment and the realistic treatment outcome.
