Scars and Treatments

Scars are formed when the body heals from an injury or wound. They can be in different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. While some scars fade over time, others are permanent and have to be reduced through medical procedures.

A scar appears when the skin repairs itself by growing new tissue to pull the wound together or fill the gaps. In some instances, excessive collagen is produced to repair the wound, leading to a scar. Dark-skinned people are more likely to have scars, and so do people with red hair.

Types of Scars

A few common causes of scars are acne, burns, cuts, surgeries, pregnancy, etc. Scars are broadly classified into the following types:

  • Contracture
Burns cause contracture scars where the skin contracts and tightens, restricting movement and causing pain. This happens when the tissues and muscles are also damaged.
  • Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are caused when the skin expands and contracts quickly. They can be seen after pregnancy, during puberty, and when a person experiences rapid changes in body weight.
  • Depressed (atrophic)
Acne, burns, chickenpox, etc can cause atrophic scars. They look like small dents or craters on the skin and are called ice-pick scars.
  • Flat
Flat scars are red or brownish. They start as raised scars but flatten during healing and look distinctive from the surrounding skin.
  • Keloids
Keloids are overgrown skin tissues and raised scars that extend beyond the affected area and can affect skin movement.
  • Raised (hypertrophic)
Hypertrophic scars are raised above the skin level and can be easily felt and seen. They stand out for a long time. Though the size reduces, raised scars will not flatten on their own.
Treatment for Scars

The treatment for scars depends on the reason for the scar, the location, intensity, age, gender, and medical condition. The doctor will conduct a thorough examination to recommend the best treatment (or a combination of therapies) to reduce the scars. Some scars cannot be 100% eliminated, though there will be visible results. The best treatments for scars removal used at our advanced clinic, Mehektagul Dermaclinic are:

  • Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is the process of sanding and scraping the topmost layer of the skin using a special device. It evens the skin surface and promotes collagen production to reduce the scars. This treatment can reduce acne scars, surgical scars, minor skin irregularities, etc.
  • Microneedling
A handheld device is used to puncture micro holes into the scars to stimulate collagen production for healing the affected area and even out the scar. Multiple treatment sessions may be required to notice the results.
  • Collagen Injections
Collagen made from purified collagen extract is injected directly beneath the skin and into the scars. Wrinkles, acne scars, etc., are treated using this method. You may need more than one injection, depending on the size of the scar.
  • Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are used to peel a few top layers of the skin to promote healing and boost collagen production. They can reduce scars and improve skin appearance. Though some chemical peels can be used at home, they are not safe and can lead to more scars or skin damage.
  • Laser Resurfacing
Laser light is targeted onto the scars to burn off the damaged skin. It can reduce raised scars, wrinkles, etc. Several treatment sessions are required to see the results. Laser resurfacing can cause skin sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Punch Grafting
Punch grafting is a surgical procedure where small punch holes are made in the scars to replace them with unscarred skin removed from healthy parts of the body. This treatment is useful to reduce deep scars but has a longer recovery time.
  • Cortisone Injections
Cor-tis-one is a steroid injected directly into raised or keloid scars to flatten them and reduce their visibility. It causes skin thinning and sensitivity.
  • Cryosurgery
Cryosurgery is where liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the scars. This causes the skin to blister and fall off, promoting collagen production and new skin to form in the affected area.
  • Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is used only when the scars cannot be treated through other methods. Keloids and hypertrophic scars are treated by being exposed to special radiation light from a medical device.
  • Surgical Scar Revision
In this method, the entire scar is removed surgically, and the surrounding skin is rejoined. A new scar will form in this area, but it will be less obvious than the previous one. Scars that don’t heal well or are too wide and long are treated through surgical revision.
  • OTC Topical Applications
Over-the-counter creams and gels can be used to reduce the visibility of scars. Anti-his-tam-ines may be prescribed to reduce the itching of scars. However, it is recommended to use creams and medicines after consulting the doctor. Self-medication can be risky and counterproductive.
