Freckles

Freckles are tiny spots on the skin in colours ranging from red to dark brown. This pigmentation is usually visible in areas with greater exposure to sunlight. The face, neck, back, shoulders, hands, arms, etc., can have freckles. While these are harmless and don’t cause pain, some spots may turn into skin problems.

People with light skin and blond or red hair are more prone to freckles. However, anyone can get these skin spots in the summer (or otherwise). Freckles will have dark brown spots if you have a darker skin tone. Though people in their early ages and 20s get more freckles, older people may also see them appearing on their skin.

How do Freckles develop?

Freckles are caused by the overproduction of melanin by the melanocyte cells in the skin. These cells protect the skin from UV light by absorbing and reflecting the harmful rays. So, in people with light skin, the melanocyte cells produce more melanin when exposed to sunlight. This results in freckles rather than tanning.

Genetics and a rare disease called Xeroderma Pigmentosum cause freckles. In most instances, freckles need not be treated. Applying sunscreen and taking good care of your skin will prevent more freckles from appearing. However, some people dislike these spots and want to get rid of them. Medical treatments like chemical peels can help control freckles and even skin tone.

To avoid harming the skin tissue, the dermatologist should advise and administer the treatments.

Types of Freckles

Freckles are classified into two types –

  • Solar Lentigines

Also called age spots or liver spots, solar lentigines are common in people over 40. They can appear anywhere on the body and don’t fade with time. These freckles have clear borders and range in colour from yellow to dark brown. Repeated sun exposure is the main reason for this.

  • Ephelides

Ephelides are genetic and may appear in children as young as a year old if they are exposed to the sun. These freckles appear on the face, arms, neck, and chest and are darker in shade (red to tan to dark brown). They can appear, disappear, and reappear on the skin, depending on weather conditions, sun exposure, etc. They have irregular borders and are not clearly defined.

Difference Between Freckles and Moles

Freckles, moles, and sunspots are different but may seem similar.

Moles are called nevi, where a bunch of skin cells are lumped together on the skin’s surface. Moles are normal and appear on any part of the body. They can be in any shape and in different colours, like black, red, tan, skin colour, brown, etc. The moles can be flat and slightly raised and don’t cause pain. However, if moles become itchy or begin to bleed, they might be a sign of cancer and require testing by a dermatologist.

When to Consult a Dermatologist

Freckles and sunspots are pretty harmless as long as they don’t change in size, colour, or texture. However, the following test can help determine if your spots need medical attention.

ABCDEs of Melanoma

  • A for Asymmetry – draw a line through the middle of the lesion to check if both halves match.
  • B for Border – see if the borders of the spots look uneven.
  • C for Colour – a change of colour is a warning sign.
  • D for Diameter – the spots are easier to treat with smaller ones; consult a doctor if they have a diameter larger than 6 mm.
  • E for Evolving – observe how the spots are changing over time; the more the changes, the greater the risk.
Freckles Removal Treatments

Freckles can be lightened to a great extent, though they cannot be completely removed like moles. Many people go for freckle treatment for aesthetic reasons. We at our advanced clinic provides following treatments for freckles:

  • Chemical Peels

Chemical peels and acids like AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid), glycolic acid, trichloracetic acid, etc., are used to remove the top skin layer and promote new cell growth to lighten and reduce the freckles.

  • Cryotherapy

Liquid nitrogen is to be used to freeze the noncancerous age and sunspots on the skin. The treated area will turn dark for a few days and shed off, resulting in new skin formation with no freckles or spots.

  • Laser

Laser light therapy is used to remove the skin layers with freckles. This promotes collagen production to heal the area and results in a new, smoother skin tone.

  • Retinoids

Retinoids are useful in preventing freckles and age spots from reaching the surface of the skin. However, not applying sunscreen when using retinoids can cause pigmentation and sunspots due to skin sensitivity.

How to Prevent Freckles

An easy way to avoid freckles is to prevent the skin’s direct exposure to sunlight. Apply sunscreen with SPF 30+ (or higher) and reuse it whenever necessary throughout the day. Use sunscreen even in winter.

  • Don’t use tanning beds.
  • Don’t go out in the hot sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Freckles are not dangerous, though it is better to get them examined by a doctor to be on the safe side.
